W.D. Von Gonten Laboratories performs geologic interface core descriptions to understand and classify, at the hand sample scale, the rock fabric and composition. An in-depth classification system has been developed to characterize and rank geologic interfaces and associated features from core and borehole image logs. The resultant library of interface descriptions has evolved in all unconventional basins and has resulted in an improved understanding how these features affect hydraulic fracture growth and conductive connectivity to the wellbore over time. This form of geologic investigation is integrated with the Mudrock Reservoir Properties, Petrophysics, and Geomechanics to upscale each of those measurements into geologic and geo-mechanical models.
Associated rock properties such as composition, texture, fabric, fossils, and reservoir quality are also recorded. Other features such as ash layers, ductile layers, weak intervals, and natural vertical fractures are measured for dimensions, described, and mechanically tested (fracture toughness and hydraulic conductivity) and all data is integrated together to determine the optimum lateral zone landing depth.
