Unconventional mudstone reservoirs are source rocks with high organic content and high hydrocarbon generation potential. Understanding the concentration, type, and the state of maturation of the organic constituents, in relation to the mineral constituents, is of fundamental importance for evaluating their reservoir quality. Basic geochemical measurements are conducted to evaluate the total organic carbon (TOC), and its state of thermal maturation (Tmax). The organic content is measured by combustion after extracting all mineral carbon content in the samples with hydrochloric acid solution. TOC and thermal maturity are also measured using a programmable pyrolysis system. The latter also provides the mobile liquid hydrocarbons (S1), heavier evolved hydrocarbons and cracked kerogen (S2), the residual carbon (S4), and mineral derived carbon (mainly by S5). The temperature at which the cracked hydrocarbon content reaches its maximum value is defined as Tmax, and provides a measure of thermal maturity of the organic matter. A higher Tmax indicates a more thermally mature sample. In addition, a number of geochemical indicators are calculated from the pyrolysis measurements.
